§ 27-134. Weight of vehicles.

(a)

Except as provided by division 5 of article II hereof, it shall be unlawful to drive on any street any motor vehicle with a weight including load in excess of that permitted by The Illinois Vehicle Code weight provisions for driving on improved highways, which are generally applicable to local jurisdictions without further specific action by local authorities, or with weight distributed in a manner not conforming to such provisions [625 ILCS 5/15-100]; provided that, if a permit has been issued in accordance with subsection (b) hereof, the increased weight limits of section 15-111(g) of The Illinois Vehicle Code [625 ILCS 5/15-111(g)] may from time to time be separately adopted by the city with regard to specific streets under city jurisdiction, and posted thereupon.

(b)

The police chief or their designee may issue a special permit authorizing the holder or designee to operate on any city street a motor vehicle or combination thereof with a weight or size of vehicle and/or load in excess of the maximums specified in said Illinois Vehicle Code. The owner/operator shall submit an application on forms provided by the city along with an application fee in an amount determined pursuant to section 27-8 titled Fees, fines and penalties.

Permits are to be issued for good cause to insure that movement will not unduly damage the city street system. Permits are only valid for the dates specified thereon; from sunrise to sunset locally, but only until noon Saturdays, not Sundays or days preceding national holidays.

(c)

The increased size and weight limitations on the below-listed city roads are established under the authority vested to said local authorities in The Illinois Vehicle Code, and such city streets are designated class II truck routes for the purposes of length, width and weight as adopted and defined by the Illinois Vehicle Code: 625 ILCS 5/15-102, 5/15-101, 5/15-111g.
